| Background:
Ordinary people do extraordinary
things. The world is filled with people whose acts of courage, outstanding
achievements and noble qualities appear larger than life. "A
hero" as defined by Detroit News Columnist Betty Deramus," is
someone who rises above his or her own weakness for an hour, a day, a
year, to do something stirring."
Heroes come in all shapes and
sizes. They are diverse in gender, color, age and endeavor. They are
explorers, scientist, writers, teachers, firefighters, neighbors and
strangers. They can be athletic, political, historical, television or
media figures. Heroes can also include people in your family or community
such as your dad, the mail carrier, your sister or your pet. Regardless of
outward appearance or profession, heroes are the yardsticks with which to
measure our everyday actions.
Heroes also functions as our role
models. they are the people who inspire us to live up to our full
potential, making us think about what we want to do. Heroes encourage us
to push limits and set goals. It does not matter who your hero is, whether
it's Michael Jordan or a high school basketball coach, the important thing
is that your hero gives you a pattern to live your life by.
